James Volkert, principal of Exhibition Associates, a museum exhibition development and facility planning firm, has developed and installed more than 350 museum exhibitions on a variety of subjects in the arts, sciences, and history. He has served as a consultant to museums nationally in the development of exhibitions, programs, and architectural development and has worked with museums in Argentina, Canada, Germany, Guatemala, Taiwan, Sweden, Uruguay, and Peru.

Jim served the Smithsonian Institution for 19 years. Most recently he was associate director of the National Museum of the American Indian, responsible for all aspects of the completion of the new museum on the National Mall. His duties included exhibition development and design, program development, architectural development and coordination, management of staff transition, and development of visitor services. He served as assistant director for exhibitions and public spaces and was responsible for the opening of the George Gustav Heye Center of the NMAI in New York and the architectural planning of the NMAI Cultural Resources Center in Suitland, Maryland.

Jim is a member of the International Board of the TyPA Foundation, Buenos Aires, Argentina, ICOM, American Association of Museums and Arkansas Museums Association. He was vice president of the National Association for Museum Exhibition and taught exhibition development at the George Washington University for 10 years.
